Rabi\u2019ul Awwal is the month in which our beloved Messenger, our role model in life, and our intercessor on the Day of Judgement, Prophet Muhammad \ufdfa, was born. His arrival marked the beginning of a profound transformation that continues to benefit humanity until the end of time. This article explores his timeless teachings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The <\/strong>Age<\/strong> of Ignorance<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n Before Islam was introduced, many Makkan Arabs were Pagans. They worshipped false idols such as Manat, Al-Lat and Al-\u2018Uzza, supplicating to them, dedicating certain portions of food to them, and prostrating to them. Other religions, including Judaism, Christianity, Magianism and Sabianism, were also present during those times. Often, elements of polytheism and superstition were found among some of their followers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Alongside this religious diversity, tribal loyalty shaped much of Arab life. The Arabs lived by the motto, \u201cSupport your brother whether he is the oppressor or oppressed.\u201d Deep-seated loyalty to one\u2019s tribe, coupled with competition for power and honour, often led to prolonged and bloody conflicts, such as those between Aus and Khazraj, Bakr and Taghlib, and \u2018Abs and Dhubyan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n This same disregard for justice extended into the domestic sphere, particularly in matters concerning women.Men were not restricted in the number of wives they could have. They could marry two sisters at the same time or marry their fathers\u2019 former wives after divorce or widowhood. Women were often subjected to exploitation and abuse, even in war times.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Amidst these conditions, Prophet Muhammad \ufdfa was guided towards a different path. He often retreated to the cave of Hira, seeking solitude and worshipping Allah SWT alone, until the first revelation of the Qur\u2019an descended upon him. Despite his initial fear, Prophet Muhammad \ufdfa accepted his role as the Messenger of Allah and began his mission to transform the hearts and character of the people around him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Spiritual Transformation<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n Prophet Muhammad \ufdfa began teaching the religion to his closest family and companions in secrecy. We remained in this state until God sent to us a Messenger from among us, whose lineage, truthfulness, trustworthiness, and chastity we knew. He called us to God, to His Oneness, to worship Him, and to renounce what we had been doing\u2026\u201d (Sahih Ibn Khuzaymah Book 6, Hadith 2113)<\/p>\n\n\n\n Those who accepted Islam were taught to put the pleasure of Allah SWT above their own desires, turning away from harmful desires and unjust practices. This sets the foundation for the beautification of human character and the eradication of systemic inequities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Moral <\/strong>and<\/strong> Ethical Upliftment<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n Prophet Muhammad \ufdfa guided his followers toward perfection of character and conduct. He commanded the ummah to speak truthfully, fulfil their trusts, maintain ties of kinship and to be good neighbours. He forbade pride, arrogance, jealousy and backbiting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u2018Abdullah ibn \u2018Amr RA narrated:<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u0625\u0650\u0646\u064e\u0651 \u0631\u064e\u0633\u064f\u0648\u0644\u064e \u0627\u0644\u0644\u064e\u0651\u0647\u0650 \ufdfa \u0644\u064e\u0645\u0652 \u064a\u064e\u0643\u064f\u0646\u0652 \u0641\u064e\u0627\u062d\u0650\u0634\u064b\u0627 \u0648\u064e\u0644\u0627\u064e \u0645\u064f\u062a\u064e\u0641\u064e\u062d\u0650\u0651\u0634\u064b\u0627 \u0648\u064e\u0642\u064e\u0627\u0644\u064e \u200f “\u200f \u0625\u0650\u0646\u064e\u0651 \u0645\u0650\u0646\u0652 \u0623\u064e\u062d\u064e\u0628\u0650\u0651\u0643\u064f\u0645\u0652 \u0625\u0650\u0644\u064e\u0649\u064e\u0651 \u0623\u064e\u062d\u0652\u0633\u064e\u0646\u064e\u0643\u064f\u0645\u0652 \u0623\u064e\u062e\u0652\u0644\u0627\u064e\u0642\u064b\u0627 \u200f”\u200f\u200f.\u200f<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u2018The Messenger of Allah \ufdfa was neither obscene nor vulgar. He (\ufdfa) said, \u201cThe most beloved to me amongst you is the one who has the best character\u201d\u2019. (Sahih Bukhari, Book 62, Hadith 105)<\/p>\n\n\n\n At the heart of Prophet Muhammad\u2019s \ufdfa teachings was the concept of mercy. He \ufdfa said:<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u0627\u0644\u0631\u064e\u0651\u0627\u062d\u0650\u0645\u064f\u0648\u0646\u064e \u064a\u064e\u0631\u0652\u062d\u064e\u0645\u064f\u0647\u064f\u0645\u064f \u0627\u0644\u0631\u064e\u0651\u062d\u0652\u0645\u064e\u0646\u064f \u0627\u0631\u0652\u062d\u064e\u0645\u064f\u0648\u0627 \u0623\u064e\u0647\u0652\u0644\u064e \u0627\u0644\u0623\u064e\u0631\u0652\u0636\u0650 \u064a\u064e\u0631\u0652\u062d\u064e\u0645\u0652\u0643\u064f\u0645\u0652 \u0645\u064e\u0646\u0652 \u0641\u0650\u064a \u0627\u0644\u0633\u064e\u0651\u0645\u064e\u0627\u0621\u0650<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cThose who show mercy will be shown mercy by the Most Merciful. Show mercy to the people of the earth, and He who is in heaven will show mercy to you.\u201d (Sunan Abi Dawud, Book 43, Hadith 169)<\/p>\n\n\n\n Social Transformation<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n Beyond individual character, Prophet Muhammad \ufdfa shaped a more just society by preserving women\u2019sdignity, protecting vulnerable groups, and teaching environmental stewardship.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Empowering Women<\/p>\n\n\n\n Prophet Muhammad \ufdfa reformed pre-Islamic patriarchal practices. He called for men to honour women\u2019s rights:<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u0648\u064e\u062d\u064e\u0642\u064f\u0651\u0647\u064f\u0646\u064e\u0651 \u0639\u064e\u0644\u064e\u064a\u0652\u0643\u064f\u0645\u0652 \u0623\u064e\u0646\u0652 \u062a\u064f\u062d\u0652\u0633\u0650\u0646\u064f\u0648\u0627 \u0625\u0650\u0644\u064e\u064a\u0652\u0647\u0650\u0646\u064e\u0651 \u0641\u0650\u064a \u0643\u0650\u0633\u0652\u0648\u064e\u062a\u0650\u0647\u0650\u0646\u064e\u0651 \u0648\u064e\u0637\u064e\u0639\u064e\u0627\u0645\u0650\u0647\u0650\u0646\u064e\u0651 \u2026 \u0625\u0650\u0646\u064e\u0651 \u0644\u064e\u0643\u064f\u0645\u0652 \u0645\u0650\u0646\u0652 \u0646\u0650\u0633\u064e\u0627\u0626\u0650\u0643\u064f\u0645\u0652 \u062d\u064e\u0642\u064b\u0651\u0627 \u0648\u064e\u0644\u0650\u0646\u0650\u0633\u064e\u0627\u0626\u0650\u0643\u064f\u0645\u0652 \u0639\u064e\u0644\u064e\u064a\u0652\u0643\u064f\u0645\u0652 \u062d\u064e\u0642\u064b\u0651\u0627<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cYou have rights over your women and your women have rights over you\u2026 And their rights over you are that you should treat them kindly with regard to their clothing and food.\u201d (Sunan Ibn Majah, Book 9, Hadith 7)<\/p>\n\n\n\n Whenever women came to him with domestic or personal issues, Prophet Muhammad \ufdfa did not dismiss them but would listen attentively and advise.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Prophet Muhammad \ufdfa even allowed women to hold public roles, a phenomenon that was contrary to the social norm at that time. His wife, \u2018Aishah RA, was one of the most prominent scholars whom the companions would consult. <\/p>\n\n\n\n Prophet Muhammad \ufdfa affirmed that women were not merely to be protected, but respected, heard and recognised for their contributions to society.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Protecting the Orphans and the Poor<\/p>\n\n\n\n Being an orphan himself, Prophet Muhammad \ufdfa had a soft spot for children who had lost their parents. He was extremely generous in giving charity and would encourage others to give within their means.<\/p>\n\n\n\n He \ufdfa said:<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u0623\u064e\u0646\u064e\u0627 \u0648\u064e\u0643\u064e\u0627\u0641\u0650\u0644\u064f \u0627\u0644\u0652\u064a\u064e\u062a\u0650\u064a\u0645\u0650\u060c \u0641\u0650\u064a \u0627\u0644\u0652\u062c\u064e\u0646\u064e\u0651\u0629\u0650 \u0647\u064e\u0643\u064e\u0630\u064e\u0627<\/p>\n\n\n\n “I and the person who looks after an orphan and provides for him, will be in Paradise like this,” putting his index and middle fingers together. (Sahih Bukhari, Book 78, Hadith 36)<\/p>\n\n\n\n In another narration, he \ufdfa said:<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u0627\u062a\u064e\u0651\u0642\u064f\u0648\u0627 \u0627\u0644\u0646\u064e\u0651\u0627\u0631\u064e \u0648\u064e\u0644\u064e\u0648\u0652 \u0628\u0650\u0634\u0650\u0642\u0650\u0651 \u062a\u064e\u0645\u0652\u0631\u064e\u0629\u064d<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cProtect yourself from Hellfire even by [giving] half a date-fruit [in charity].\u201d (Sahih Bukhari Book 24, Hadith 21)<\/p>\n\n\n\n His \ufdfa teachings transformed charity from an occasional act of generosity into a shared social responsibility.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Encouraging Environmental Stewardship<\/p>\n\n\n\n Prophet Muhammad\u2019s \ufdfa mercy even extended to animals and plants. He \ufdfa transformed not only who individuals worshipped, but also how they treated one another and the world around them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Embodying the Legacy<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n Prophet Muhammad\u2019s \ufdfa life reminds us that meaningful change begins with the heart, but its impact should ultimately be felt by those around us.
